The Tamil Nadu government has again banned the Mullaperiyar dam controversy film ‘Dam 999’. Nine years ago, the film was banned in Tamil Nadu since its release. Even though the Supreme Court has given permission to screen the movie, the Tamil Nadu government alone has not given permission to screen the film. When the ban expired yesterday, the government renewed the order. Tamil Nadu continues to ban the film, claiming that the story of the film, which was released in 2011, is similar to the Mullaperiyar Dam. Dam 999 is a film about an old, dilapidated Dam and the tragedy that occurs when it collapses. With that, Tamil Nadu went ahead with measures including obstruction of the Indian Parliament. The film was subjected to brutal actions, including refusing to post posters, imposing fines on theaters that came forward to show it, influencing channels not to take satellite rights, and breaking IMDb ratings by cyber fighters. Dam 999, directed by Dr. Sohan Roy, has since won numerous international awards. The film made it to the Oscar shortlist with five entries in three categories and qualified for next year’s Golden Rooster Award in twelve categories. Dam 999 is also the first Indian film to be eligible for the Chinese Oscar. The screenplay for the film, written and directed by himself, was also selected for the ‘Permanent Core Collection’ in the Oscar Academy Library. “For a good film, you don’t need big money or big stars. You just need a good script and a team of beautiful crew members backing it. That’s it”. Says award winning film director Sam Khan who awaits to collaborate with the Taiwanese Government for his next ambitious project. Budding director Sam Khan is a man on a mission. A firm believer in tiding in the new wave, he wants to promote the segment of short format films between 1 to 50 minutes. This is a zone he believes is a beautiful space to be in, because here you don’t need very big people, budgets or stars. “For a good film, you just need a good script and brilliant crew members. You don’t need money or a big ambience. I am trying to create a different path for shorter format films. Because no platform right now, neither Amazon nor Netflix are buying shorter format films, and this segment definitely needs encouragement, because today people from smaller towns like Lucknow, Kanpur are asking, is there a future of making such films?” “If I or any budding director is trying to make a shorter film, today there is no future in terms of commercial success for it. We need to make this segment bigger so we can encourage people to experiment. Collaborating with the Tokyo Government for his next short format film, “Knuckle Duster” This Indo- Japanese Collaboration is going to be shot entirely in Tokyo post the Covid-19 situation lifts. 19 October, 2020, Kolkata: A short film “Dashobhuja” (the ten-armed Goddess) by Manicktala Chaltabagan Lohapatty Durga Puja Committee has drawn the who’s who of the performing arts and film world to highlight the ten astras or weapons held by Maa Durga in each hand and its deep spiritual meaning and message. This musical film would be released tomorrow after its premiere at the ITC Royal in conformity with social distancing norms, would be in Bengali and Hindi. The short film has been conceptualised and produced by culturist Sundeep Bhutoria who is also the Chairman of the 78-year-old Manicktala Chaltabagan Lohapatty Durga Puja famed for its Dhak and Sindur Khela. The film is directed by Arindam Sil and maestro Bickram Ghosh has given the music. While Pt Vishwa Mohan Bhatt of Grammy Award and Padma Bhushan-fame has done raag Durga for a portion of the film, Dr Sonal Mansingh has recited the Sanskrit shlokas. Singers Usha Uthup, Iman Chakraborty and Somchanda Bhattacharya have lent their voices to the short film whose script is written by Sugato Guha and choreographed by Arnab Bandhopadhyay. Ayan Sil contributed as the director of photography. The entire shooting was done at the Eastern Zonal Cultural Centre (EZCC) Kolkata in Salt Lake. Nusrat Jahan and Rituparna Sengupta have lent their voice as the narrators of the story. For the Hindi version, Dr Sonal Mansingh has done the narration. “Chaltabagan Durga Puja has been the first puja in city to popularise Dhak Utsav and Sindurkhela as special events which has been graced by chief minister, governors, diplomats, film fraternity, artists, industrialists, book lovers, folk and cultural performers and so on. This year we not organising Dhak and Sindurkhela factoring in the covid situation so we thought of trying our something new through which we would be able to showcase the cultural and spiritual aspect of Bengal’s most popular festival to our partners, associations and other cultural organisations in India and abroad,” said Sundeep Bhutoria, Chairman, Manicktala Chaltabagan Lohapatty Durga Puja Committee. The film revolves around the ten astras or weapons that the gods gave to Maa Durga, namely kharga (sword), trishula (trident), sudarshana chakra (thunder disc), vajra (thunderbolt), tir dhanush (bow and arrow), bharji (agni), sankha (conch), lotus, khitaka/parashu (gada) and snake. It starts with a lady doing “Chandi Paath” and a little girl representing Devi Durga. The ten astras of Maa Durga are represented by ten women.
