“CLASSICAL SCULPTURES”

Exquisite sculptures made by Sudarshan Sahoo, Padmashri Awardee Sculptor will be displayed in a solo art exhibition at Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai from 12th to 17th December 2018 between 11am to 7pm. It will showcase his beautifully carved sculptures made in stone, wood mediums with all the hues of spirituality and traditional heritage associated with this unique craft of stone carving in relevant perspectives of visual fine arts to highlight it subtle nuances.

This show has been  inaugurated on 11th December 2018 by Chief Guest Dr.Arvind Jamkhedkar, Chairman, Indian Council of Historical Research, Guest of Honour Mrs.Amruta Fadnavis will unveil the book – Sudarshan Sahoo : a legacy set in stone in the Gallery.

  

Sudarshan Sahoo hails from the divine city of Puri in Odisha. He has been practicing this craft over more than six decades and has acquired skill and mastery in carving out statues of deities for temples and other decorative artefacts. Being erudite in Sculptures and ancient lore especially Buddhist literature, he has so far successfully executed numerous assignments such as carving Jataka tales at Dhauligiri Peace Pagoda and many more stone status and murals for Buddha temples and stupas in Japan, England, Buddhist Pagoda at Milton Keynes etc. His fibre glass statues at Wardha, Gold plated fibre glass status at Delhi, Orissa, Bihar, Darjeeling, M.P. etc were very well appreciated by all. Recently, a 101 feet long Buddha Jatak story mural project has been completed by him at a Spiritual Park near Mumbai. His exemplary dedication and determination has created a style of his own that boasts of applying numerous techniques in decorative and classical carvings. He has developed and started Sundarshan crafts museum (Training-cum- Studio) in 1977 in his native place where he imparts training to new talent in this field. He also provides a platform to upcoming talent to display their works in gallery. This Gurukul system of learning has relived the tradition again since 1991 when he established the Sudarshan art and crafts village at Bhubaneswar. He is a proud recipient of national award from Govt of India in 1981 and Padmashri in 1988 from President of India. Government of India has also conferred on him the prestigious Shilpa Guru wards in 2003 alongwith honourable Doctorate D.Litt on behalf of Utkal University of culture. He has received appreciations and accolades for all his earlier presentations in vivid art galleries all over India.

The present series depicts vivid carved sculptures in Tenali stone, Odisha red stone, green stone, Granite, ivory stone &wood mediums. These mostly illustrate dancing Ganesha, Bhagwan Shri Vishnu, Gajajnan, Vinayak, Radha-Krishna, Buddha Dharmachakra Pravartan Mudra and various other deities. His works also illustrate 64 Yoginis as well as 24 Thirthankars in Tanali stone and skilled carvings depicting other gods and Goddesses showing the spiritual fervor and other associated feelings for the unique traditional heritage of religious and the related eternal sentiments. The other works in this presentation include other deities and traditional divine statues and stone murals depicting their subtle nuances in the relevant perspectives of visual fine arts.
